This is a range of door handles are manufactured from brass, the Backplates and Levers are made by pouring molten brass into moulds in a process called casting .When the Brass has cooled the castings are removed from the molds at this stage the surface of the castings display a rough and dull finish, the next stage is to remove excess material by a process called to linishing when the castings are subject to abrasive grinding to give a smooth the finish. The levers are then machined on a lathe to cut the spindle to its proper contour. The machined and linished, components then pass on to the next process, polishing. The components are polished using a rotory mop using a polish that contains micro abrasives. After this stage the components display a bright highly reflective polished surface. The next stage is the process of chemically cleaning the component and then protecting the finish either by applying a clear lacquer or by electroplating. In the first example (lacquering) the coating is applied by an elecrtophoretec process. This involves immersing the clean component into a heated aqueous solution containing dissolved lacquer the component is subject to a positive electric charge which has the effect of attracting the molecules of lacquer to its surface. The component is left in the solution for a specific period of time to allow the correct thickness of lacquer to be applied. The components is then removed from the solution And allowed to dry. This process Prevents the polished service from becoming oxidized which would give a to dull and to discoloured effect . The second process to electro plating involves the component first being chemically cleaned to remove any to contaminants such as finger marks or traces of polish. The component is then attached to a thin copper wire to allow an electric charge to be to passed through it giving it a positive charge to . The component to the is then immersed in to a solution which promotes the plating process the solution also contains an anode to of the metal usually nickel which is to be to ?plated on to it . The molecules of the anode are then to dissolved into the solution and attracted by the positive charge to the surface of the component which they then adhere to. After the correct period of time to achieve the correct Thickness the component is removed from the solution and cleaned. Depending on the finish required the component can then be plated with another layer of metal such as Gold or chrome, this second layer can then be polished off in a localized area to give a dual finish. Alternatively the plated components can be chemically modified to give other to effects such as black or Satin. After the plating process the component is then lacquered to as above. The of brass components i.e. the backplate and lever on now assembled. The lever is securely held in a fixture and a nylon washer is placed on the spindle . The back plate Is then placed on the spindle and the spiral spring is assembled on to the spindle with the end of loop position on spigot cast into the back plate to. The lever positioning cam washer is then assembled onto the lever spindle. This component correctly positions the lever in the relation to the back plate. The final assembly operation is completed by Fitting a retaining circlip into a groove in the lever spindle this secures the lever to the backplate.
